A Consistent Lack of Sleep May Cause Hypertension
A new study presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session has revealed that getting fewer than seven hours of sleep regularly is associated with a higher risk of hypertension—especially for women.
For this large-scale study, researchers examined data from 16 studies conducted between January 2000 and May 2023. The data encompassed information from 1,044,035 individuals aged 35.4 years to 60.9 years from six different countries who had no prior risk of hypertension during a median follow-up of five years.
After adjusting for factors such as sex, age, education, BMI, blood pressure, and smoking status, the researchers found that those who consistently slept fewer than seven hours per night had a 7% higher risk of developing blood pressure. That number increased to 11% for those sleeping fewer than five hours a night. Plus, women who got fewer than seven hours of sleep a night had a 7% higher risk of developing high blood pressure than the men in the study.
The researchers were surprised age didn’t affect the sleep-hypertension link since sleep patterns tend to shift with age. They also noted that the sleep data was based on self-reported questionnaires, which didn’t account for shifts in sleep patterns over time. Nonetheless, this study underscores the importance of prioritizing sleep for overall good health.
Apple Cider Vinegar May Aid Weight Loss + Improve Chronic Conditions
There’s no question that obesity is on the rise, along with its associated health conditions, including everything from heart disease to diabetes. Now, according to a study published in BMJ, Nutrition, Prevention & Health, apple cider vinegar may offer a solution to help this growing issue.
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study looked at 120 Lebanese adolescents and young adults who were either overweight or obese. The researchers divided the participants into four groups, with three receiving specific daily doses of apple cider vinegar (5, 10, or 15 milliliters) diluted with water, while the fourth group received a placebo.
Over 12 weeks, researchers monitored the participants’ body measurements and collected blood samples every four weeks. The results revealed all participants who consumed apple cider vinegar experienced improvements in their weight, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip circumference, and body fat ratio.
Additionally, those who took apple cider vinegar showed improvements in their total cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar, with the group taking the 15 ml dosing experiencing the biggest improvements. This study sheds light on the potential benefits of apple cider vinegar to help with weight management and its related health conditions.

7 “Happiness Hacks” That Can Boost Your Mood
Can happiness be learned? In a study from the University of Bristol, researchers analyzed findings from 228 undergraduates who took one of the school’s positive psychology programs one or two years previously. What they found is that students with the strongest mental well-being continued to practice the seven “happiness hacks” they were taught, including performing acts of kindness, increasing social connections, savoring experiences, focusing on positive daily events, practicing gratefulness, being physically active, and using mindfulness and meditation techniques. What Your Pee Says About Your Health
The next time you go to the bathroom, you may want to look at the color of your pee before you flush. That’s because its color can reveal important information about your health. Experts say healthy urine is clear or pale yellow, which means you’re adequately hydrated, and waste is being cleared from your body. Dark urine can signal dehydration and if it’s cloudy or contains blood you may have an underlying medical condition and will want to follow up with your doctor. (More)
Can Wine Raise Breast Cancer Risk? The Simple Answer is Yes
A recent survey, funded by the National Institutes of Health, revealed a concerning statistic: over 50% of adults in the United States are unaware of the link between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of cancer, including breast cancer. Plus, it doesn’t matter what type of alcohol you drink. Having just one drink a day can elevate breast cancer risk by 7% to 10% while consuming two to three drinks a day can elevate the risk to 20%. While there is no safe level, the less alcohol you drink the lower your risk. (More)
Intermittent Fasting Linked to 91% Higher Risk of Cardiovascular Death
The 16:8 intermittent fasting program where all daily meals are consumed within eight hours, followed by a 16-hour fast, has gained popularity in recent years. In addition to promoting weight loss, studies have shown it can benefit blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar. Yet, a new analysis of over 20,000 U.S. adults has revealed an alarming statistic—that those following the 16:8 intermittent fasting program had a 91% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease versus those who spread out their meals. Insomnia Associated with Heightened Risk of Chronic Health Conditions
In a recent longitudinal study published in the Psychosomatic Medicine Journal of Behavioral Medicine, researchers identified four key sleep patterns: good sleepers, insomnia sleepers, weekend catch-up sleepers, and nappers. Those with “suboptimal sleep health phenotypes,” particularly insomnia sleepers, had a 72% to 188% higher risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, and frailty over 10 years. Nappers had an increased risk for cancer, diabetes, and frailty. Yet, weekend catch-up sleep was not associated with any chronic conditions. (More)
